Familiar mistakes cost Manchester United again as they slipped to a comprehensive 3-0 defeat to bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils enjoyed this fixture last season, memorably beating the Merseysiders on their way to FA Cup glory, but they couldn’t build any momentum as two costly errors from Casemiro allowed Luis Diaz to bag a brace. Mohamed Salah later got in on the act, curling in at Andre Onana’s near post, to wrap up all three points for Arne Slot.

Early on, Trent Alexander-Arnold thought he’d scored and went all Steven Gerrard as he kissed the camera after arriving at the back post to fire in, but Salah was offside moments before and the strike was chalked off.

However, United couldn’t get much rhythm going, with midfielder Casemiro not proving particularly useful. The Brazilian was at fault as the Reds went two goals up before the half-time interval, with Luis Diaz striking twice.

His poor pass was gobbled up by Ryan Gravenberch and Diaz was soon on hand to head in Salah’s cross to the back post.

Fast forward a few minutes later and Diaz robbed Casemiro in another dangerous position and again finished well from a Salah assist, guiding the ball into the bottom corner.

New signing Manuel Ugarte could soon replace Casemiro in Erik ten Hag’s starting XI but United couldn’t get a goal back even with the Brazilian departing for young Toby Collyer at half-time. Instead, it was Liverpool who extended their lead.

Salah has frequently punished United in the past and he did the same on Sunday, converting well after Dominik Szoboszlai charged forward and slid him in for his 15th goal against the Old Trafford outfit.

United have now slipped to a second Premier League defeat in as many games after Sunday’s loss, while Liverpool have recorded nine points so far to sit at the top of the standings alongside reigning champions Manchester City.
